Virgin Mobile Christmas Safety Campaign
Virgin Mobile launches Christmas Mobile Safety
Campaign - ‘In Safe Hands’
18 December 2003
Virgin Mobile has launched a joint Christmas mobile
safety campaign. Called ‘In Safe Hands’, the initiative
aims to help the public protect both themselves and their mobile
phone during the festive season.
Backed by the Metropolitan Police Service and the Home Office,
‘In Safe Hands’ gives important advice on a series
of mobile-related tips and general safety advice over the festive
season. The tips are:
- Pre-programme the number of a reputable local taxi firm into
your phone. When travelling home after a Christmas party, order
a taxi from inside the venue and ensure that it calls you when
it arrives, so that you do not have to wait outside for it alone.
- Use a reputable taxi firm or a black cab. Do not take an unregistered
minicab and do not accept a lift home from a stranger.
- Text the registration number of the taxi and the taxi company’s
name to a housemate/partner/friend before you get in the taxi.
- Try to make sure a housemate/partner/friend knows when to
expect you home.
- To help avoid having your phone snatched from you, try not
to make non-urgent calls in crowded, busy places. Also avoid
flashing your phone on the street to help deter opportunistic
thieves.
- Whenever possible, keep your mobile out of sight in your pocket,
jacket or bag and use a handsfree earpiece as this will prevent
opportunist thieves snatching it from your hand.
- Register your phone with your operator, and make a note of
your IMEI number (which can be found by keying in *#06#). If
your phone is lost or stolen, both the SIM card and handset
can be barred across all networks.
- Always make sure your phone is charged before you go out so
you can make a call; you might need it in an emergency.
