November 2010 It seems like a deal will soon be reached that allows passengers on the London Tube to use their mobile phones. Passengers have been complaining for years that as soon as the descend into a tube station they lose their mobile signal. London Mayor, Boris Johnson, had expressed concern that the Tube Network would need to be mobile friendly by the time of the London Olympics in 2012. Unfortunately TfL had said that external funding would be necessary due to technological problems and the projects lack of commercial viability.
The latest deal is rumored to involve the four major networks and be worth £150m. Fortunately passengers will not only be able to enjoy a 3G mobile signal but have access to Wi-Fi too. By using the latest smart phones, commuters will be able to access email and the internet using Wi-fi and enjoy more speed.
