Data Association announces first national Mobile Internet usage figures31
October 2002 The Mobile Data Association (MDA) today
announced the first set of Mobile Internet page impression (PI) figures
on behalf of GSM Network operators O2, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone.
The figure for September 2002 is a staggering 340 million, over 11
million PI's per day. There is a wide variety of
WAP based compelling services currently available for the Mobile Internet
user. Of the 340 million PI's for September 2002, one of the most popular
services is mobile internet messaging and chat, with other content
such as games/fun, sport, news and information services all showing
high popularity. In the UK today there are currently over 25 million
Mobile Internet enabled handsets (awaiting confirmation of figure from
O2 and Vodafone). The MDA initiative launched
earlier this month will announce the UK Mobile Internet figures for
PI's on a monthly basis, and quarterly figures for the total number
of WAP enabled handsets currently available on the four networks. The
initiative is supported by a web site - www.text.it
that includes information on other forms of messaging. Mobile Internet
information, available on the site from the beginning of November,
will allow new users to learn more about services available to them
including how and where they can configure their phones. The site will
also provide users with regularly updated top ten Mobile URL's and
additional mobile services; and for those developing WAP services a
tips and style guide section. Mike Short, Chairman
of the MDA comments; "Following the release of text messaging
figures over the last four years, the MDA has seen significant growth
in several areas of Mobile Data, and in particular the messaging market.
The ever-increasing range of content and services available to a variety
of consumers has been apparent through the figures announced today,
demonstrating that growth is not restricted to text alone!" |
